Teaching Philosophy
Music study has proven to be infinitely important in a number of ways. It enriches life by expressing a wide range of emotions; it stimulates both sides of the brain, engaging creativity and logic simultaneously; it is a universal language that speaks on a human level.
My goal is to encourage my students to become life-long music lovers. I aim to develop an appreciation for various musical styles and genres, knowledge of how music functions, and the ability to successfully perform at the piano.
I use a comprehensive musicianship approach to develop the whole musician. My students learn music theory and form. They develop technical skills to facilitate healthy playing and control. They learn to listen acutely for sound quality and musicality. They develop functional skills: ear training, improvisation, harmonization, and sight-reading. I integrate these skills into the repertoire they learn. I also advocate learning a variety of styles and genres of music from the wide array of piano literature. My goal as a teacher is to facilitate learning by setting up an environment where the student is given the necessary tools to make new discoveries.
Through individualized, invested teaching, I tailor my approach and materials to fit each student’s needs and personal goals, while maintaining standards of sequential and balanced learning. I believe in fostering an intrinsic desire to pursue music study, which develops sustainable enthusiasm for life-long musical engagement.
